Packed Cell for Whole Blood

Have ever noticed how blood bank often gives us packed cell even though it is whole blood that we have asked for?

Furthermore, they do not indicate this on the blood form and the only tell-tale sign that we have been given packed cell and not whole blood is that the pack of blood is smaller than we would expect for whole blood.

Proposal

I would like to send a letter from all of us informing blood bank that they must comply with our instructions for whatever blood products that we have ordered as we are in the best position to decide what the patient needs. In the event that they cannot supply what we have ordered, they should contact us directly and discuss with us as to what wold be the best alternative for the patient. They should never change our orders unilaterally and if they do, they will have to be fully responsible for any ill-effects that the patient may suffer.

Sometime ago I asked for blood and got a pack on which was written Red Blood Cells. I rang up the blood bank and told them that I wanted whole blood. I was told it was the same thing, and that the whole blood comes labelled as such. I assumed he was right.

Conclusion

As there was no consensus on this issue. No action will be taken.
