Call to order The
meeting was called to order by Dr Ali Azman Minhaj at 6:00 p.m. The feasibility of a standy
anaesthetist The chairman of the meeting
introduced the agenda for the meeting and stated that following the previous
Quarterly Medical Staff Meeting dated 21 November 2002, there has been a
request for specialist anaesthetic cover during office hours for non-code blue
(i.e. non-emergency) incidents. In the discussion, the definition
of “non-code blue” incidents or events was unclear and could not be
established. Established and existing
anaesthetic services provided, other than in the operating theatre, already
include the following:
Epidural analgesia for labour;
Acute pain services for non-operative conditions;
Anaesthesia in remote location (e.g. VIR room, Cancer Centre);
Critical Care Services (ICU, CCU, HDU); and
Resuscitation (e.g. code blue). Should there be a need to contact
an anaesthetist urgently within and outside office hours, the hospital
protocol has been to contact the coordinator of the North Tower Operating
Theatre during office hours, and the Deputy Nursing Administrator for O.R. outside
office hours. Dr Jacob Thomas noted that this was clearly stated in the
Subang Jaya Medical Centre Anaesthetic Roster, and that he will highlight
this to all doctors. Code blue services It was added that SJMC already
possessed working models of emergency services e.g. code blue. These systems
have been proven to work efficiently when utilised correctly. Problems that
arose were caused by abuse and misuse of these systems. Should specific assistance be
required, direct communication between relevant clinicians is encouraged. It was concluded that specialist
anaesthetic cover for non-code blue incidents and events is not required. Code blue or emergency services
must be utilised properly. Adjournment There being no further discussion
the meeting was adjourned at 7.15 p.m. |
